We asked, “What inspired you to serve on the TSOPHE Board?”

Joy Deleon: I was inspired to serve on the TSOPHE Board because I believe deeply in strengthening the public health workforce and advancing health education across Texas, especially for the tiny humans that are my reason for everything that I do. TSOPHE’s mission aligns closely with my own commitment to building collaborative, equity driven systems that support communities statewide. Serving on the Board offered an opportunity to contribute to an organization that elevates professional development, advocacy, and evidence based practice for public health practitioners.

“What has been the most rewarding aspect of serving as Board?” 

Joy Deleon: The most rewarding aspect has been working alongside passionate, mission-driven professionals who care deeply about improving population health. Collaborating with colleagues who bring diverse expertise and lived experiences has been energizing and affirming. I value the chance to help shape initiatives that directly support students, early career professionals, and seasoned practitioners by creating spaces for learning, connection, and growth. Seeing our collective efforts translate into meaningful resources and opportunities for the public health community is incredibly fulfilling.

“What are you most excited about for TSOPHE's future and its impact on public health in Texas?”  

Joy Deleon: I’m most excited about TSOPHE’s growing role as a statewide champion for health education. As Texas continues to face complex public health challenges, TSOPHE is uniquely positioned to strengthen the workforce, expand training opportunities, and elevate the importance of prevention and health promotion. I’m encouraged by the momentum around collaborative partnerships, student engagement, and innovative professional development. TSOPHE’s future impact will be felt through a more connected, empowered, and prepared public health workforce that can meet the needs of Texas communities with compassion, skill, and resilience.
